Glasgow Disabled Scouts Residential
A residential holiday lodge for disabled scouts aged 5 - 25.
Enabling the clients intent:
Glasgow Disabled Scouts came to Chambers McMillan with the problem that they needed their residential lodge to enable the Scouts to work more inclusively, especially as their group has a wide range of disability. . The clients asked for a design which would better enable them to use the Lodge with all the scouts, including many different wheelchair users, and neurodivergent scouts, experiencing the spaces differently. It was especially important to provide a design that would allow the older scouts to continue as a group, including those who were post-school, keeping connection to their community.
I designed a series of workshops which would allow the different scouts to explore their use of space, and their needs in relation to the residential lodge, and would also give us the opportunity to observe this exploration, in order to inform our design process for the adapted lodge.
The processes of the workshops gave the scouts the opportunity to investigate and understand the spaces they would need for weekend and holiday living at the lodge, and also to investigate dimensions and designs to be as broadly inclusive as possible.
